The day at Cattana was sunny and enjoyable, with the wet weather holding off. Over 70 volunteers showed up for the event and planted 1500 trees in just over 2 hours. This site will provide a significant addition to the Wetlands habitat and a much needed buffer between the lakes and surrounding cane fields.
The day combined the efforts of Treeforce, Cairns Regional Council, Greening Australia, Barron River Catchment Care, Conservation Volunteers Australia, GBRMPA and a host of other tree planting enthusiasts. We were also fortunate to have the assistance from the University of Santa Barbara who brought 25 fit young participants. Great workers all.
All participants worked solidly to plant the trees and then mulch half of the plot. After that, a BBQ provided by Greening Australia rounded off the morning well.
Council will water and maintain the trees to maturity. It will be a rewarding 4 years watching this planting grow to become a significant part of the Cattana landscape.
